Symptoms of bone fractures

A bone breaks when excessive force is exerted upon the bone causing it to break. Such force is typical when two vehicles collide, when a victim falls from a high elevation in a construction accident, or when a bicyclist or motorcyclist falls onto hard pavement.

Symptoms of bone fractures vary depending on the type of bone injured and the severity of the fracture. For example, if the fracture is a simple fracture or hairline fracture, the symptoms may be localized swelling, pain or tenderness in the area. Oftentimes hairline fractures initially go unnoticed, causing them to worsen. Symptoms for more serious fractures are much more pronounced, including deformity in the area of the fracture, bruising, and loss of function in the area. If the fracture is an open fracture there will be a bone protruding from the skin.
